Clam belongs to Phylum Mollusca and generally includes all those species of bivalves other than oyster, mussels and scallop. Clam has superior amino acids, fatty acids, and vitamin-mineral profiles. It is also a good source of cholesterol, phospholipids and polyunsaturated fatty acids like EPA and DHA that are essential for growth of prawns. It is an excellent ingredient in aqua feed where it acts as a chemical attractant and feeding stimulant with growth promoting effects. It increases the palatability of the feed to give good growth response in shrimp/prawns.
Whole clam is steamed to release the meat from the shells. It is then dried and processed to clam meal, which is an excellent ingredient for prawn feed.
